Feel like you’re experiencing more blemishes recently? As masks become the new normal, try these Kiehl’s Tips to address new imperfections along the jawline, mouth area and cheeks, also known as “Maskne”.
Focus on Cleansing
When washing your face, we recommend using your hands in a gentle circular motion for 10-20 seconds, then splash off the cleanser with warm water. If you are experiencing blemishes, making sure you are cleansing thoroughly each evening. For normal to oily skin we love our exfoliating Blue Herbal Cleanser blended with Salicylic Acid. This cleanser is specifically formulated to help unclog pores.
If your skin is dry to normal or feeling sensitive, use caring and gentle cleansers and look for skin soothing ingredients. We love our Centella Sensitive Facial Cleanser; our mildest cleanser for sensitive skin removes dirt, oil and impurities. Alternatively if your skin is sensitive but you prefer a foaming cleanser, we recommend our new Cannabis Sativa Seed Oil Herbal Cleanser for a gentle yet thorough cleanse.
Protecting Skin Barrier Function
According to Kiehl’s Scientific Director, Dr Nancy Ilaya, your first instinct may be to follow up with drying creams and treatments. However, because the skin’s barrier function may be compromised, you want to look for gentle products and avoid anything too drying. To help restore skin’s barrier function you can reduce the rate of water loss with a moisturiser that contains ingredients such as Lipids, Squalane, Ceramides or Hyaluronic Acid. These ingredients can help to maintain hydration in the skin and the function of the skin’s natural moisture barrier. We love our Super Serum to boost hydration levels under moisturiser.
Don't Skip The Moisturiser
Especially in the morning, this will help keep skin hydrated and acts as a barrier to friction from the mask. Dr Megan O’Brian, Kiehl’s Consulting Dermatologist, recommends Ultra Facial Oil-Free Gel Cream if your skin is on the oily side. Or, top up with our intensely moisturising Centella Sensitive Cica-Cream to leave skin feeling soothed. Remember to get lots of masks and wear a different one every day.
