HOW TO IMPROVE SKIN TEXTURE
Top Tips for Smoother-Feeling Skin
Uneven skin texture can appear at any point in our lives and for various reasons. Bumps, flakes and rough patches are no fun, showing themselves more readily when makeup clings to them. Pore-less, Instagram-filter skin might not be achievable, but smooth textured, natural-looking, clear, and glowing skin is possible with the right advice and products. Luckily texture issues are to do with the surface of the skin, rather than the deeper layers, so there’s plenty of skincare available to help.
What causes skin to become rough or textured?
Uneven skin texture can happen for a variety of reasons including the natural reduction in collagen that happens as we age. We know that the key is the health of our skin barrier function, the uppermost, visible layer of our skin. Dead skin cells can sit here and contribute to an uneven skin texture which is why we always recommend regular exfoliation. Our skin contains both water and natural oils and sometimes this can skew off balance due to factors out of our control, like the weather.
Humidity can affect skin and most of us have probably experienced dryness when the temperature drops, sun damage can be a factor too, causing skin to dry out and show signs of premature ageing. It can also happen if we’re a bit overzealous with the acids, exfoliator, or other skincare products. Even using water that's too hot can damage the moisture barrier. Lifestyle factors also play a part, not enough vitamin rich food, too much stress or burning the candle at both ends can all leave skin feeling rough, textured and uncomfortable.

What does uneven skin texture feel like?
First up a reminder that all skin is textured; we’re not made of glass and skin is an organ with hair, pores and natural textural changes. However, if you notice rough patches appearing, dry and flaky skin, bumps or skin that feels rough to the touch, then it’s worth following our advice to bring back a smoother feel. As well as being incredibly satisfying to the touch, smooth skin means makeup applies more easily and light reflects more readily so skin looks more radiant.
What can you do about it?
Lifestyle plays a big part in skin health, so it’s worth trying to limit stress, get enough sleep and cut down on caffeine and alcohol. Drinking lots of water can help to improve skin texture quickly if textural issues are caused by dehydration. Try a few days of eight glasses a day and skin texture will be improved. Healthy eating is also high on the list – eating a rainbow of fruit and vegetables means you’ll be getting all the vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants your body needs to help fight damaging free radicals. Our skin repairs itself when we sleep, so it’s a no-brainer to prioritise 8 hours of shut eye a night and your skin will thank you.
