We reached out to several Kiehl’s skincare experts from around the UK to learn about the favourite tried and tested tips they’ve learned throughout their careers. Here’s what we learned...
SPF is essential to any anti-ageing routine
No anti-ageing routine is complete without a daily sunscreen. UV rays from sun exposure are the biggest cause of visible signs of ageing so it’s important to wear SPF protection all year round, not just when it’s sunny. Even when the sun isn’t shining, layering on a high-factor SPF is essential to protect against sun damage and premature signs of ageing including dark spots, fine lines and wrinkles from forming.
Muzne Mohammed, skincare expert at Kiehl’s Broadgate says: “Protecting your skin from the sun every day (come rain or shine) is crucial in order to prevent ageing. Pair our antioxidant Vitamin C-enriched serum with your sunscreen to help protect skin cells from damaging free radicals as well as helping reduce the appearance of lines.”
Jack Edwards, skincare expert at Fenwick, Newcastle, adds: “I’d recommend adding Powerful-Strength Line-Reducing Concentrate and our amazing Ultra Light Daily UV Defense to your daytime routine to boost radiance and protect against the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and pigmentation. To complement your daytime skincare, add our Retinol Skin-Renewing Daily Micro-Dose Serum to your night-time skincare routine visibly reduce the appearance of lines, crow’s feet and age spots!”
Formulated with a powerful trio of pure retinol, peptide and ceramides, our serum promotes surface skin cell turnover and helps to strengthen the skin barrier function for younger-looking skin. Follow with a layer of our Ultra Light Daily UV Defense for a hydration top up, advanced UVA/UVB technology and pollution protection. We always recommend that you wear SPF, particularly when wearing ingredients such as Retinol or Vitamin C.
The hydrating heroes to know
To help prevent water loss that can cause your skin to become dry and dehydrated, it’s important to strengthen your skin barrier function. Try to find a moisturiser for dry skin packed with hydrating ingredients like squalane, glycerine and hyaluronic acid.
Paul Spears, skincare expert for Kiehl’s online, recommends Ultra Facial Cream, our worldwide bestseller. “Look for nourishing formulas that help replenish the skin’s moisture balance, like our Ultra Facial Cream. This light-textured moisturiser, which helps hydrate for up to 24 hours, suits all skin types that need superb hydration. It is formulated with Squalane and Glycerin, leaving it feeling soft and smooth!”
Jack Edwards adds: “Use hydrating serums such as the Hydro-Plumping Re-Texturizing Serum Concentrate to visibly plump your skin and give it that surge of hydration. Then, follow on with Ultra Facial Cream to provide up to 24-hour lasting hydration and Ultra-Light Daily UV Defence to help protect your skin from sun damage and any other external aggressors.”
To intensely hydrate your skin while you sleep and prevent overnight moisture loss, apply a layer of Ultra Facial Overnight Rehydrating Mask before bed, too.
Oily skin can get dehydrated too
When putting together your routine for oily skin, try to find lightweight formulas that won’t block your pores. As with all skin types, hydration is key. Start your routine with an oil-free cleanser and toner to remove excess oil without stripping the skin of valuable moisture. Follow with non-comedogenic products to hydrate skin. Our Ultra Facial Oil-Free Gel Cream will provide up to 24-hour hydration and won’t clog your pores.
Muzne Mohammed says: “Despite being oily, your skin may still be dehydrated, so to balance out the oil levels, you need hydrating products.”
Jack Edwards adds: “Balance the oils in the skin by using fantastic products like our Ultra Facial Oil-Free Cleanser and Ultra Facial Oil-Free Gel Cream. These products provide balance and 24-hour lasting hydration while controlling shine to give you a hydrated and fresh look!”
Also, don’t forget – oily skin types shouldn’t shy away from face oils. It may seem like the last thing you want to add to your skincare routine, but a face oil may be part of the solution. Discover more tips for oily skin types here.
It’s all about the balance for combination skin
Paul Spears’ top tip for caring for combination skin is to look for products formulated for all skin types. He says: “These formulas can help to balance skin without over-drying dry areas or causing excess oil in the T-zone. A great formula to help with this is our Calendula Serum-Infused Water Cream. This unique, lightweight moisturiser provides a burst of soothing hydration for fresh, radiant-looking skin, and up to 24-hour hydration.”
Muzne Mohammed adds: “Combination skin can benefit from a gentle yet effective water-soluble cleanser. The goal is to effectively remove impurities and makeup without leaving the skin feeling tight or dry. A toner can also be a crucial part of your routine. Choose toners that are high in anti-oxidants, and that are anti-inflammatory rather than toners that are high in alcohol which can further dry your skin.”
We recommend the deep cleansing yet soothing Calendula Deep Cleansing Foaming Face Wash and Calendula Herbal-Extract Toner. Enriched with calendula petals, they help to soothe skin feel.
