SKINCARE TIPS FOR OILY SKIN

Oily skin can be tricky to handle. If your skin is oily, your sebaceous glands are probably overactive and producing too much sebum. While sebum is essential for healthy skin as it helps to lock in moisture, too much of it can cause clogged pores and congestion. Finding the right skincare routine for oily skin can be the difference between a glowing or greasy look. We’re here to figure out why you might be more prone to blemishes and blackheads on the nose and the products that can help you stay shine-free.

What affects oily skin?

Genetics: Whether you have normal, dry, combination or oily skin largely depends on your genetics. The condition of your skin is a different matter and is something that can be influenced by various internal or external factors.

Age: The good news: as you get older, your skin will naturally produce less sebum. You may even find that the skincare routine that worked for your oily skin in your twenties needs a little refining in your thirties or forties. The even better news: signs of ageing like fine lines and wrinkles are more prominent on dry skin, so oily skin can be slower to show them.

Humidity: Higher temperatures in the summer months and humid climates lead to increased oil production and sweating, which can also clog your pores and cause congestion. When you break out the swimwear, you may also want to break out a non-comedogenic cleanser, especially during hotter, more humid days.

Enlarged Pores: Whether you have larger pores is usually determined by genetics, but enlarged pores and oily skin also go hand in hand. Age, sun damage, changes in your weight and even a poor cleansing routine can clog and stretch pores. As larger pores produce more oil, you’ll want to keep your pores clear to reduce skin irritation and the appearance of blemishes.

The Right Skincare: A clear, oil-free complexion starts with the right products. To avoid feeling greasy, especially in high temperatures and humid climates, look for lightweight, mattifying and non-comedogenic products that don’t clog your pores. Cleanse regularly after exercise or sweating and don’t skip your moisturiser. While it may feel counterintuitive to layer creams and lotions on to oily and blemish-prone skin, all skin types can get dehydrated and need a little extra help – especially if you’re using products for blemishes, as these can dry out your skin. As always, a layer of sunscreen is also essential.
