Should I Wear SPF All Year Around?

World of Kiehl's / Should I Wear SPF All Year Around?

SPF stands for sun protection and while many of us have no problem remembering to regularly apply sun cream when the sun is shining or we’re on holiday, on dull, cloudy days it can be a different story. Is it really necessary to wear SPF whatever the weather though?

The short answer is yes. Regardless of how bright and sunny it is, SPF is an all-year-round essential.

The sun can have a huge impact on the condition of your skin. While the sun can help our body produce the necessary Vitamin D, it can also contribute to dark spots and skin damage. UVA rays are also the main cause of skin ageing.

Thankfully, there’s now a broad range of formulations available making it easier to get the sun protection you need. Kiehl’s SPF are formulated to feel lightweight on the face.

Are there skin types that are more at risk of sunburn?

As a general rule, everyone should be careful in the sun by applying a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30. Those with fairer complexions (particularly those with fair skin types and blue eyes) or should apply a high-factor cream. Even olive or darker skin tones need protection though. People who spend a lot of time outdoors, whether it’s for fun or work, should also take extra care and apply SPF regularly.

When and how should I use sunscreen?

While the easiest way to protect your skin from UV light is to avoid sun exposure completely, that’s not always possible. For a quick win, cover up with hats and clothing and avoid the sun when it’s at its highest point in the sky (between 11am-3pm). If you work outdoors or simply can’t stay indoors all the time (let’s face it, who can?), wearing lotion every day is also essential. To make sure it’s at its most effective, sunscreen should be applied just before exposure and reapplied frequently and generously to keep you protected – especially after swimming and towelling.

The higher the SPF, the better the protection you have from UV rays. SPF 50 is ideal. Water-resistant formulas are also the best sun creams if you’re going to be swimming and sweating a lot, but don’t forget to keep reapplying.

Should I use a separate sunscreen for the face?

Just like moisturisers for your face and body, sunscreen formulas differ depending on where you’re going to apply them, so always remember to check the usage instruction. For some face products you can expect lighter formulas that absorb quickly and are often designed to be worn under makeup – so you can incorporate them into your daily routine.
