When Should I Start Using Anti-Aging Skincare Products?

SKINCARE

As we get older, our skin isn’t as good at keeping itself hydrated, nourished and protected. Our skin cell renewal tends to slow down, meaning our skin can lose its firmness and the first signs of ageing can appear. While we can’t stop the ageing process, applying the right anti-ageing products as early as our twenties can help reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and age spots.

Skincare In Your 20’s +

While good skincare might not be your biggest priority in your twenties, it’s at this age that you start to lose the integrity of collagen in your skin, which can have an effect on its firmness. Just because your skin might look great now doesn’t mean you should skip essential steps in your routine. Keeping your skin hydrated and moisturised is key to helping it maintain its barrier function and staying healthy looking.

Skincare In Your 30’s +

This decade can be pivotal to your skin’s health. Just as hangovers may feel harder to recover from, environmental aggressors such as UV rays and pollution can also take their toll on your skin’s appearance. Your skin cell turnover may be affected which can mean dead cells can accumulate on the surface and leave your skin looking dull and tired. The levels of hyaluronic acid in your skin also naturally decreases, especially in the epidermis layer (the outer layer of skin), meaning that your skin loses its natural ability to maintain a good level of hydration and dry skin can appear.

When wrinkles can set in permanently as your cells can’t recover as well from damage caused by external aggressors. Your body's production of hyaluronic acid, elastin and collagen has slowed down, so your skin needs to boost its natural collagen production. Skin also tends to be less hydrated in our forties and, depending on your skin type, this can be a good time to incorporate more hydrating creams with actives into your daily routine to keep your skin strong and radiant.

The youthful skin of your thirties and forties can become thinner, dryer and less taut as you get older. Not only can lines deepen on your face, neck and décolletage, but your skin may lose volume. The menopause can also have a serious effect on glowing complexions as your skin will lose a significant amount of its collagen and moisture. Applying hydrating serums, day creams and night creams can help target a number of signs of ageing, but the best thing is to build a skincare routine and be consistent with it.
