Wet shaving vs dry shaving:
The complete guide

Choosing between wet shaving and dry shaving can be a tricky decision. On one hand, wet shaving is a more indulgent experience resulting in a closer shave, however if you’re short on time you may prefer a dry shave. Ultimately both methods have their benefits. Read on to learn more about both options and what products we recommend.

WHAT IS WET SHAVING?

As its name suggests, traditional wet shaving requires water and covering your face and neck in a shaving gel or foam to prepare the skin before using a razor blade to cut the facial hair below. It’s probably the first image that comes to mind when you think of shaving.

IS WET SHAVING FOR YOU?

By preparing your skin before shaving and creating a lather, wet shaving helps the razor to glide over your skin more smoothly, creating an easier surface to shave and less irritation. Not only is it less likely to cause uncomfortable bumps and ingrown hairs, but it can also create a closer shave, meaning you can don’t need to pick up your razor again so soon.

It’s not without its nicks though – you need to concentrate and practice your technique if you’re using a manual razor. Showering before with warm water can help to soften hair and skin though. Using nourishing shaving creams and moisturisers pre- and post-shave can also create better results.

WHAT TO USE WHEN WET SHAVING

Close Shavers Squadron Smooth Glider Precision Shave Lotion instantly melts on contact with your skin to transform from a lightweight gel-lotion to a transparent no-lather shaving gel. Infused with Kukui nut oil and aromatic essential oils, it helps to soften facial hair and soothe skin to encourage a precision shave while protecting from razor burn.

Our most popular Ultimate Men’s Shave Cream, the White Eagle Ultimate Brushless Shave Cream is enriched with fast-absorbing sesame oil and softens skin for a more comfortable shave. Enriched with menthol, it cools and soothes skin, delivering a smooth take-off without the need for water.

Formulated with hydrating and soothing aloe vera and, the Blue Eagle Ultimate Brushless Shave Cream is suitable for all skin types, including sensitive skin, and encourages an irritation-free shave.

WHAT IS DRY SHAVING?

Otherwise known as electric shaving, dry shaving enables you to ditch the lengthy lathering by using an electric shaver instead. Saving you precious time in the morning, it allows you to dive straight into your daily grooming without the need to apply a gel or foam or even wet your face. It’s not only great if you’re in a rush, but it still delivers a close shave.

While you could dry shave with a manual razor, we recommend you don’t. It can leave your skin feeling irritated, sensitive and encourage ingrown hairs. For an instant dose of post-shave comfort, we also recommend including Ultimate Razor Burn & Bump Relief in your dry shaving routine. Formulated with aloe vera, willow herb extract and vitamin E, it reduces any post-shaving tingling sensations, instantly hydrates, cools and calms razor burn. It also contains Lipohydroxy acid, a derivative of salicylic acid, which gently exfoliates skin to help protect against ingrown hairs and dullness.
