Sustainable beauty is a hot topic right now and for good reason, by making smart eco-friendly choices we can all help strive towards a better future for the planet. Whilst millennials are often the driving force behind sustainable beauty, everyone can do their bit.
From brands to consumers, we all just need to be a little more aware, a little more mindful. Which is why, at Kiehl’s, we have two sustainable beauty initiatives that are well worth having on your radar, but first let’s dive into what sustainability actually means.
WHAT IS SUSTAINABILITY?
Essentially, sustainability means being able to achieve a balance and exist in a constant state. So, in beauty terms, that equates to brands creating products that don’t deplete natural resources and help to maintain an ecological balance, so we can all keep enjoying the products we use but not at the detriment of the planet.
KIEHL’S AND SUSTAINABILITY
At Kiehl’s we have been making products in no frills packaging since 1851. It all started in an East Village apothecary in New York. Kiehl’s may go way back but we are committed to a future made better. Today, 36% of our formulas contain at least one sustainably sourced raw material but by 2020 that number will be at least 50%.
Since 2005, we have reduced CO2 emissions by 82%, water consumption by 21% and waste generation by 36%. Our Ginger Leaf & Hibiscus Firming Mask contains sustainably sourced Thai ginger leaf, the quinoa husk extract in out Nightly Refining Micro-Peel Concentrate is also sustainably-sourced, whilst the argan oil in our Superbly Restorative Argan Body Lotion is ethically traded.
Right now, the “Made for All” Body Wash is formulated with 95% naturally-derived ingredients including sustainably-sourced aloe vera and hand harvested soap tree extract. It is formulated to be 100% biodegradable and packaged in a bottle made from 100% post-consumer recycled materials. And, what’s more, the body wash is suitable for the whole family (ages 3+), which means you don’t need multiple bottles of products.
KIEHL’S AND RECYCLING
By 2020, we are committed to including 30% PCR materials in 100% of our saleable product packaging. Recycling is an important part of being sustainable and it’s something that, as a consumer, you can get involved in too! Here at Kiehl’s we want to reward you for recycling, which is why we have the Recycle & Be Rewarded programme. All you have to do is return your empty full-size Kiehl’s product to the store and you will receive one stamp on a Recycle & Be Rewarded card (Also, if you return your empty product in a reusable bag you’ll receive an extra stamp!). Collect 10 stamps on your card and you will get one complimentary Kiehl’s travel size product, worth up to £9.50.
