How to identify and manage combination skin?

World of Kiehl's / How to identify and manage combination skin?

As combination skin is neither dry nor oily, but both at the same time, finding the perfect skincare routine can be trickier than it is for your friends with oily or dry skin. Using a routine that includes a cleanser, serum and moisturiser for combination skin may be the solution.

Do I have combination skin?

Does your skin behave differently in different areas of your face? Are you prone to areas that feel dry and oily at the same time? If you notice that your T-zone – this includes the forehead, nose and chin – is oilier than other parts of your face and your pores tend to be larger around the nose and smaller in other areas, you may need a skincare routine for combination skin. The texture of your skin can also help to identify whether you have a combination skin type. If your skin feels tight and dry everywhere other than your T-zone, which can be greasy and shiny, you’re going to need some combination skincare.

The key difference when identifying whether you have oily skin or combination skin is that those with oily skin can expect greasy complexions and excess oil all over your face. Combination skin types usually only have oily T-zones and dry, dull cheeks, temples and patches around the eye area.

What does a good combination skincare routine involve?

Identifying what skin type you have is important to help you find the right products and routine to care for it properly. With combination skin, balance is key. Cleansing can be the biggest challenge for combination skin. You’ll want a cleanser that gently clears the oil from your T-zone to prevent clogged pores, blackheads and spots forming, without stripping moisture from your naturally drier areas. Combining a mild cleanser and nourishing moisturiser or serum for combination skin on your cheeks but using a more rigorous product on your T-zone to combat excess oil and congestion can help to strike the right balance.

Should I still moisturise?

Hydration is essential to every skincare routine. When caring for combination skin, it’s important to make sure oily areas are not made too greasy but dry areas get the moisture they need. A light cream moisturiser with is a great option for combination skin. Apply it sparingly to the forehead, nose and chin and look for mattifying formulas too.

The joy of multi-masking

Using two different products for your two different problems can also help manage combination skin. The joy of multi-masking is that you can manage both skin concerns at the same time. Apply a nourishing mask to your dry areas and a purifying clay mask to your T-zone to help remove excess sebum and dirt. Use once a week as part of your combination skincare routine to reset your skin and improve balance.
